The Quandary

Questions

Ask us anything.
Here’s the usual list.

In the order people actually worry about them — starting with the one everybody asks first.

01 Are we locked in?

No. The door is never locked and you can walk out at any second, for any reason. The locks in the parlor are on the puzzles, not on you.

02 Is it scary?

Not in the way you are bracing for. There are no jump scares, no flashing lights, no loud or unexpected noises, and nobody is going to touch you. Lovecraft dealt in dread rather than shock, and so does the parlor. The unease is entirely intellectual.

03 Will we be put with strangers?

Never. Every booking is your group alone.

04 Do we need to know anything about Lovecraft?

No. A short video before you go in gives you everything the mystery requires. Readers will spot things other people will not, but nothing is gated behind having read the stories.

05 What happens if we do not finish in the hour?

Nothing terrible. The owner built this as a mystery rather than a race — in his words, “Escape rooms are reputable because you have to get out within an hour or something terrible happens. This is more of a mystery.” Plenty of good teams run out of clock and still leave happy.

06 How many people should we bring?

Three to six. Two can do it, but more minds on the same objects makes the room considerably more fun and a good deal more solvable.

07 What does it cost?

A $75 reservation holds your slot and covers up to three people. Anyone beyond that is $25 a head, up to six total, settled at the door.

08 How old do you have to be?

You must be 18 or over to make the reservation. Under-18s are welcome with an adult. A group of minors can play as long as a responsible adult stays on the premises, and that adult is not charged if they do not enter the room.

09 How long should we allow?

Allow more than the hour itself. There is a briefing video before you go into the parlor, and most groups want a few minutes afterwards to talk about what they missed.

10 What if we get stuck?

You ask, and you get a hint. Your host watches on camera for the whole hour, and the number of hints you took gets written on the board next to your time — so they cost you pride rather than the game. Most teams that finish have used one or two.

11 Can we cancel or move our booking?

Yes, without penalty up to 24 hours before your time. Inside 24 hours, call or text 607-269-7638 and we will do what we can. No-shows and late arrivals are not refunded, and a late arrival does not extend the hour.

12 Can we bring food or drink?

Not into the parlor. Food and drink in the lobby can be arranged in advance for parties. No alcohol on the premises, and anyone who turns up impaired will not be admitted.

13 Can you host a private event?

Yes. Birthdays, reunions, team days and class trips can book outside the standard slots. Call or email and we will build the time around you.

14 Where do we park?

In the Ulysses Town Square lot, outside the door. We are minutes north of Ithaca on NY-96.
